The United States remains one of the most dynamic destinations in the world for those who want to study, build, and grow. But knowing how to navigate it is a completely different story. Japan’s Start-up Ecosystem is on a tear, with venture capital funding double what it was a year ago. Start-ups proliferate at university. Every region has some program to support new entrepreneurs.
Despite all of this momentum and excitement, very few Japanese start-ups actually make it to overseas markets.
This session explores why you should consider building your start-up in America, when is the right time, and approaches that work to, “Make it in America”
In this fireside chat, Glenn Robertelli of RI Bio and Neil Rosenblatt of Azabu Insights Strategic Consulting bring two complementary vantage points to answer these three questions: one from inside a U.S. life sciences ecosystem that receives and supports foreign entrants, and one from inside Tokyo, advising Japanese companies on strategy and execution.
Together they'll get past the generic advice and into the specifics. What is the data that shows its worth your time to go to America? How to really know if you can make it? And what it takes — where to actually land and why geography matters more than founders expect; what U.S. customers, partners, and investors need to hear that Japanese decks typically don't say; how hiring, pricing, and sales motion have to change; and the difference between opening a U.S. entity and building a U.S. business.

中東では、連日厳しい情勢が報じられる一方で、今年7月には香港でサウジアラビア発の大型テックカンファレンス「LEAP East」が開催されるなど、新たなビジネスや挑戦がいまも動き続けています。

Glenn Robertelli is Executive Director of RI Bio, Rhode Island's life sciences trade organization, which connects companies, hospitals, universities, capital sources, and government partners across the sector. He was appointed in July 2024. Before joining RI Bio, he was co-founder and Chief Operating Officer of Admetsys, a Boston-based medical robotics and AI company working at the convergence of biosensors, learning algorithms, patient-specific metabolic modeling, and automated drug delivery. He brings more than 25 years of international experience across the technology, medical, and consumer products industries, and holds a degree in Asian Studies with a focus on Japanese language and literature.

Japan’s Start-up Ecosystem is on a tear, with venture capital funding double what it was a year ago. Start-ups proliferate at university. Every region has some program to support new entrepreneurs.
Despite all of this momentum and excitement, very few Japanese start-ups actually make it to overseas markets.
This session explores why you should consider building your start-up in America, when is the right time, and approaches that work to, “Make it in America”
In this fireside chat, Glenn Robertelli of RI Bio and Neil Rosenblatt of Azabu Insights Strategic Consulting bring two complementary vantage points to answer these three questions: one from inside a U.S. life sciences ecosystem that receives and supports foreign entrants, and one from inside Tokyo, advising Japanese companies on strategy and execution.
Together they'll get past the generic advice and into the specifics. What is the data that shows its worth your time to go to America? How to really know if you can make it? The Venture Café community, committed to the mission of “Connecting Innovators to Make Things Happen,” has brought about numerous “Happenings” in the past. This session is designed to introduce newcomers to our weekly signature event, “Thursday Gathering,” and facilitate networking among first-time attendees (Beginners). 中東では、連日厳しい情勢が報じられる一方で、今年7月には香港でサウジアラビア発の大型テックカンファレンス「LEAP East」が開催されるなど、新たなビジネスや挑戦がいまも動き続けています。
今回のセッションでは、サウジアラビアを中心に、現地の人びとや社会が何を見て、どう動いているのかを、ニュースでは見えない現地のリアルから読み解きます。
ゲストは、メーカー、商社、コンテンツ/IP領域を横断しながら、中東と関わってきた鷹鳥屋明さん。「中東で一番有名な大分県民」とも呼ばれ、現地の人びととのあいだで独自の存在感を築いてきました。現在は独立し、テック関連、日本文化・ポップカルチャーの発信も続けながら、日本と中東をつなぐ活動を幅広く手がけています。
文化や価値観、王族との交流など、日本とは異なる日常のなかで重ねてきた経験も交えながら、いま中東で起きている変化と、その先にある可能性について伺います。

Glenn Robertelli is Executive Director of RI Bio, Rhode Island's life sciences trade organization, which connects companies, hospitals, universities, capital sources, and government partners across the sector. He was appointed in July 2024. Before joining RI Bio, he was co-founder and Chief Operating Officer of Admetsys, a Boston-based medical robotics and AI company working at the convergence of biosensors, learning algorithms, patient-specific metabolic modeling, and automated drug delivery. He brings more than 25 years of international experience across the technology, medical, and consumer products industries, and holds a degree in Asian Studies with a focus on Japanese language and literature.
日本の中東で働いている人。大分県大分市出身、筑波大学 第一学群人文学類卒業卒業後に複数の転職を経て外交イベント、ビジネスを通じてアラブ、中東に深く関わる。2021年に「私はアラブの王様たちとどのように付き合っているのか？」(星海社新書)を執筆
